Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

    • Mary
      • She chose to spend time with the Master
      • She sat at the feet of Jesus and heard His word
        • Greek: Akouo
        • It means to understand
        • She wasn’t being passive – she was eagerly and intently focused on Jesus’ Words.
        • By sitting at Jesus’ feet, Mary also lowered herself. It was a form of reverence and submission to the Lord.
    • Martha
      • She welcomed the Lord into the home
        • She desired to have His presence in her home.
      • She got busy with serving
      • Distracted: In fact she was so busy doing what she thought was good to serve that she was distracted from the actual purpose of Jesus’ visit.
      • Resentful: She was a little upset that Mary wasn’t serving in the same capacity.
    • Jesus’ Response
      • Martha
        • “You’re worried and troubled” – or anxious and disturbed.
        • The Lord clearly says that we’re not supposed to be anxious about things
          • Luke 12:29 – The world is anxious & worried about things. We’re not called to be like the world, but to trust God. He knows our needs and will provide them.
          • Phil. 4:6 – We are told instead of worrying to make our requests and needs known to the Lord.
        • She had many things on her mind.
      • Mary
        • There was one necessary thing and Mary had chosen it.
          • Stopping and hearing what Jesus has to say is absolutely essential, more-so than any other capacity in which we may serve.
          • Jesus went on to say that it was beneficial and it would not be taken from Mary.
  • It’s fellowship with the Lord.
    • We’re quiet, still and listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit, bringing us the words of the Father.
    • This is what Jesus did when He walked the earth. He would withdraw to solitary places to spend time with the Father.
  • It is a place of repentance
    • Luke 7:36-38.
    • The woman here knew she was a sinner and she knew who Jesus was.
    • This was an act of humility and repentance at His feet.
  • We can bring our needs to Him while at His feet
    • Luke 8:41 – Jairus
    • 1 Peter 5:6-7 – Jesus desires that we cast our cares upon Him
  • We need to hear His voice
    • 1 Kings 19:11-13 – the Lord’s voice is a still small voice. We need to put ourselves in a quiet place to hear it.
    • 1 Peter 5:8 – the devil goes about roaring like a lion. He’s loud, demanding attention.
  • We need to abide in Jesus if we want to be fruitful
    • John 15:1-8
      • He will prune our lives to remove things that hinder us.
      • We can do nothing apart from Jesus. In order for our service to be of any use to Him, then we need to allow His fruit to develop in our lives.
      • His fruit develops in our lives when we spend time fellowshipping with Him.
    • Matt 7:21-23
      • There will be many who did things for the Lord but that did not have a relationship with Him.
      • It’s not the works that will determine where our lives end up, it is the relationship.
      • Sitting at the feet of Jesus is key to developing our relationships with the Lord.
  • How do we get to the Master’s feet?
    • We first have to get into His presence.
    • Matt. 6:5-10
      • Get into a quiet place.
      • Acknowledge who the Lord is. Worship Him.
      • Psalm 100
    • Analogy: POTUS
      • Imagine you desire to make known a petition to the President
      • Do you stand outside the White House and shout like a protestor?
      • Imagine if you could gain access to the Oval Office instead – wouldn’t that be a better way?
        • The people in the office have the President’s attention and he hears them.
      • When you want to bring something to the Lord, why would you yell and shout from the outer court, when you could get right to His feet?
  • Closing thought:
    • “Beware of saying, ‘I haven’t time to read the Bible, or to pray’; say rather, ‘I haven’t disciplined myself to do these things.’” – Oswald Chambers
